And he spoke to are quite a larger audience what does he bring into the campaign what do you see in Ron Paul Dave. things. Authenticity. Or the ability to change. The paradigm of government. The ability to change the paradigm is right now. Both government broken on all sides. And then there's only one person I think the constriction of the way it has to be tricks and that's Paul. Dave he's in the back of the go right now is Ron Paul electable others yet. Perpetual candidate. Let a good question. Right now they're all Robert and He's. He might not be Electability candidate. But he has the candidate. There's gonna make the changes we need to make and that's the that's probably the biggest sector of the sort that tries this level we know that the media's. But it won't pretend he's playing uphill battle there are two other candidates other candidates that are they're more formidable. We're trying to do it oh geez. You're the one that we need to change the paradigm government can feel government broken Ron Paul won I think it's going to be able to exit better than anybody. David do you think Ron Paul will still be in by the time we get to the New York State primary. And are contact are you in contact with them and illusory chance you might come back to Western New York again. All that the good question his hoping western new York and we're looking at now what. Our New York goes What candidate at least. The base and have the elections move forward it's got tickets to all he needs a big victory coming up a little bit and hopefully and he can't let. 2. Rick Santorum Insight - Kevin Hardwick

    Fri, 27 Jan 2012

Kevin Hardwick is on the WB in is college political science professor and Erie county legislator Kevin good morning. In also local of Rick Santorum who says he's tired and broke and heading home to do his taxes are you disappointed. I think you know I was on a little bit but. You've got to understand running for any office takes a lot out of I mean anybody that's running for office even run for dog catcher can can tell you that. Running for president gets that terrific If Santorum knows he's not gonna win Florida and and Florida's winner take also coming in second there's absolutely no benefit there. Other than perhaps bragging rights. To date. Or at least as of last night he had not spent a dying. And Florida media. He's back competing there he's conceding that probably to Mitt Romney. Any political back and and get a good collective he had a monster performance in the debate last night. If you watched it it was just it was just awesome. And I think he was performing not only for. The American people and states down the road. Super Tuesday and and the like which is you know about a month away. But he was also hoping to. Attract the attention of someone with money. Because that's the thing that Newt Gingrich has had that Rick Santorum has now. I mean they were vying for the longest time to become the anti Romney. New got some money and it's it gave my little bump well I think after last night's debate people are gonna be wondering. Whether that's money well spent and Newt Gingrich I think if they looked at that debate closely they say that the real anti Romney the person that they should be putting their money Is Rick Santorum. And I think that's what he's hoping for. I think what you're saying you're Santorum would've done better in Florida even South Carolina. If you were able to raise money why can't he raise money It's it's difficult to raise money and let you know you know end and you look at did Newt Gingrich is money is that coming from a lot of people there's one rich guy. Writing now. Couple weeks ago Rick Santorum that the Large group of evangelicals. That may turn into some money down the road. You know there is this long intermission coming up after after Florida there's not a lot going for. For the month of ever. And it's pretty similar to a football team going in at halftime and collecting themselves and oftentimes. And until backers know that oftentimes the second half is very different from the first step and I think that's what Santorum have to be be hoping for. You know you look at you look at the changes even from debate to debate I mean you have to tip your the Mitt Romney I mean. And Newt Gingrich has been doing really well and debates and last night. Apparently Romney had been studying is still. That figure they'll do Gingrich's tendencies and had to counter for every one of them and just. Slap them around all over this state it was it was amazing to see that the turnaround in the performance there. You know like to say you don't know what's gonna happen in the second half you know if if he's electable or not. It's has his campaign served a purpose. You know all a yeah if he doesn't become the nominee I'm not sure that it has other than maybe with. sections. Of Romney care and comparing it to obamacare last night giving the purpose big event that actually helped the campaign of Barack Obama. Because Romney did not have a good answer for that health question I mean he looked like Barack Obama trying to trying to. Defend obamacare. And I think it's reprieve could be a preview of things to come and that's gonna scare a lot of Republicans. Kevin thanks for joining us good points we appreciate your time this morning. You to Kevin Hardwick tenacious college political science professor and Erie county legislator.

  3. GOP Debate - POLITICO's Dave Levinthal

    Audio

    Fri, 27 Jan 2012

Our next WB live line guest is David Leventhal David money and politics reporter for Politico dot com and we turn to him very often those week. Focus on the presidential debate in Washington politics good morning David. Boy it's getting nasty now between Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich. Because isn't about you know eighty that debate these guys have but it was a very important debate in the sense that. That's the kind of say to this campaign and you're really did themselves no sabres last night it was easily one of his worst performances and several debates. It took a look let's. He really that much of a message he wasn't on point and strangely enough Didn't have to have been taken it logs from Gingrich and some the other candidates. And a couple of debate was really the aggressor it would it was something that we really haven't seen from him and he attacked Gingrich and number of issues. I'm not the least of which you know what is. Our record on nine health care and lobbying war influence peddling as that would be and the really gotten a response. dame the Gingrich was just taking the lead in the Florida polls. CBC so unpredictable his ups and downs depend on his impulse or mood of the day. You know you remember that back and caucuses to December Gingrich was in in the single digits in the polls since. And he rocketed up in December and then Ronnie came back in the especially with a lot of advertisements that one of its super pac. Was sponsoring and begging for all Iowa. This nastiness between Romney and Gingrich last night really got to Rick Santorum didn't. And I mean Rick Santorum actually had a very strong and very emotionally charged debate. Performance say he got some more air time than he typically have in the past couple debates. And the you know you really want kind of both of them but. He also wouldn't Gingrich is so all around it was a bad night for Gingrich really whether it's Mitt Romney whether it was Rick Santorum and I have no response so much all. You know and Rick Santorum memory in this that it says he's tired and going home. The Republican candidates still in the race but he says he'd rather spend a Saturday sitting in his kitchen table. state where they race for the Republican nomination has become a two man fight. Does it sound like he's. Closer dropping out either before or right after the Florida primary. This is a bad situation and then really doesn't seem to be much of a outboard their coming up we used term that this says cycle. I hate cycle with Florida he has no chance there. He's not really polling very well some of these states to follow whether that be a main rider Going in the Super Tuesday states it's already outside and if you're going not even going to schedule of events the night of the Florida primary is. It wouldn't be surprised saying it had another week or perhaps a couple weeks and we do not see and term in this race he tried to be that conservative alternative. To Mitt Romney the entire round if you will and it just doesn't seem like he's gonna be able to seize that mantle from Newt Gingrich. All four of these candidates were asked last night why his wife would be very strong. As the First Lady Bob reason some people vote for a particular candidate David. it was an extremely awkward moment because Newt Gingrich started to talk about. The forty wives now she was talking about the three wives. Its competitors on stage but it won't sitting there are cringe inducing I think I'll. It Gingrich had three wide. So it was kind of an awkward moment all around where. But why has had singled out in shipments TV and more than a few my colleagues and friends that network which is not a good moments for the debate at all I you know for is escalate You know campaign time and that's certainly played a very important all out for the President Obama still won most active first ladies that we've had. A long time and and to what can what was an area. You know good good moment for the debate last night. David when we talk do it's always interesting thank you again. Thank you. David Leventhal money and politics reporter for Politico dot com.

  4. GOP Debate Recap - Joshua Dyck

    Audio

    Fri, 27 Jan 2012

UB associate professor of political science Joshua Dickens and studio morning just insists he good morning. Nineteenth GOP debate last night this one was in Jacksonville of fiery one and the last one. Before the Florida primary next Tuesday what do you take from the statistic. I took from this debate that. Mitt Romney is a very well handled candidate and the very capable candidate who came out swinging. I think that. You know what we saw coming out of South Carolina where he kind of got beat up. And failed when he tried to stay above the fray in the debates. He was finally taken down a notch by Newt Gingrich and up early polls in Florida after south Carolina's results showed that Gingrich was going to win. And what we've seen the last few days is a reversal of that and wants Romney came out swinging. To make sure that Gingrich was not able to score. Any major points. In that debate as he's done in the past and so I think that Romney last night. It in my opinion it did enough maybe not to win the debate enough to hold off. Gingrich's attacks. We're positive there will be one maybe two more quinnipiac. College polls. How tight this racist as it was very tight between and Gingrich and Romney just before last night's debate let's switch now to a Ron Paul. Why does Ron Paul. Keep running for president I mean what is the purpose what is the reason because an enormous amount of money's been raised and spent. I'm. A futile attempt. But Ron Paul and Ron Paul's supporters. Believe that. The standard. GOP candidate is inadequate to properly address the issues that they consider to be most important. Which are primarily dealing with the budget and the organization of government. And so. When you have an ideological candidate like Ron hall. The the point for them running is simply to have their massive teacher and so. What they're trying to do is is our system does not really. Allow for outsider voices to have any sort of representations. Of their other countries that have some proportional representation system. Or give an outsider party you actually get some sort of representation in congress. The United States if you're not playing. In the democratic field at the Republican field K you're not playing for the most part. And so Ron Paul. You know really represents. A movement. To push the government. 22 sort of a smaller capacity greater federalism at center. Okay if the Republican Party notices that people. To a great degree. On any issue are responding to something Ron Paul those proposing could something like that windup and GOP platform. That's exactly I mean just look at the rhetoric between 2008 in 2012. In the way that. The GOP ran in 2008. And now how their running. And how they've been running since 2010. Really. This party looks a lot more like Ron Paul's vision of what the Republican Party should look like. Four years from 2008 than it did in 2000. And if you think about sort of the the Paul Ryan budget mean. In a lot of ways a lot of the things that were sort of moving forward in the direction of smaller government having serious conversation. About the largest entitlement programs those are Ron Paul type issues Ron Paul doesn't wanna cut a little bit he wants to cut most of the federal government. he wants have serious conversations about reforming Medicare Medicaid and Social Security which make up two fifths of the federal budget. And so he's talking about something different than any other candidate he's talking in a more ideological way. He he's not gonna win and he's American and be elected but his byte by talking and being in this in these debates. He knows that people are hearing what he's saying he's hoping that it will influence opinions with in his party and potentially policy. Rick Santorum same type in in quite not really Rick Santorum is is it was really a long shot. Kennedy someone who you know wing when he left political office and he was defeated by double digits and senate race in Pennsylvania and so. Santorum is sort of an unlikely Kennedy he sort of more of a classically true. Conservative Christian candidates some someone who the Republican establishment can get behind who has very conservative. Moral values moral issues opinions. Which sort of go towards that. Christian conservative base of the Republican Party. And so that he's stayed in the race and if you look historically you know his success and Iowa mirrors to a certain extent. Previous candidates who were able to appeal to that base like Mike Huckabee in 2008. And so you know he's in this race I think for that reason that he was trying to beat the conservative candidate as was Rick Perry. And so you know that that sort of evolved to a point where the conservative base is split between Santorum and Gingrich. And and nice to have you here this morning we appreciate your insights cash my pleasure as always that's Joshua Dicker associate professor of political science at the university at buffalo.
