Let's go right to the WB -- live line and welcome doctor Andrew highland. He's with Roswell Park Cancer Institute we're gonna talk about tobacco marketing in much of it aimed at teens. It's very dangerous and they feel that needs to be removed from stores that are frequented by kids doctor highland good morning thank you for being with us hello good morning. And a doctor highland so many people so many agencies have tried this before and they did not do well what makes you think you're gonna succeed.
Well I think today. They're in the event it is with reality check group which is. Are there at the -- Arm of this state tobacco control program there's -- A lot of 130 teenagers from all across the state. Are here in buffalo talking about justice issue. They understand that. The tobacco companies have -- Focused their marketing it to in the retail environment. Primarily that's the spot where it is. And they recognize better than anyone that they are the prime targets. Of that advertising and they're coming together really just to say enough is enough and we need to reduce the advertising reduce the number of outlets. And it. Get to get those tobacco sales away from schools and out of pharmacies.
And we should mention -- all these skills from across New York State -- from around here are going to be in Niagara square after a 10:30 this morning now. Doctor -- why do kids smokers -- because of advertising and marketing or could it be because mom and dad smoked.
Well I think but yet to -- answers both of those but. That you know just a couple of years ago a National Cancer Institute put out. -- graft size -- and demonstrating clearly that this advertising and promotion and it is an area of primary reason why kids try to smoke initially and and they get hooked on Condit nicotine and then they sort of lose that free choice. To stop whatever they want some studies have shown that the advertising and promotion has a stronger effect -- even peer influences. -- it's such as their friends and their parents. So what it's not a you know it's not a cure but it is a major step they can be taken and it's easily within our reach to accomplish.
Because smoke because it's cool. I thought I think it's cool.
spoke person because they perceive it to cool. If you know anybody that's put I had the TV out -- the last week or two is seen some of recent public service announcements by the department of health. Sort of huge you know telling the truth so what. Can happen to lie to people when they spoke and that its depth perception of cool which is really put forth by the tobacco industry. With the bottom line of just trying to hook I'm new users so they can make profits now and for many years into the future.
Do you know of any of these ads that appear in any magazines that are of the kids are buying.
Certainly yeah you can go and take a look at magazines judges looking this morning like -- Glamour Magazine looking at some of the smokeless products that are. And glamour magazine's so you'd typically think focused products several more Ramel. It use type of product by -- Glamour Magazine it's sort of a women's fashion. Magazine so why. And I you know I know the companies will say that they've signed limited are eliminated their -- magazine act activity. By the -- examples to the contrary.
You know is graphic anti smoking commercials we've been hearing on the radio I'm seeing on TV. How long do you think it's going to take before they sink in and you can see positive results.
Well the you know here at the New York State smokers quit line is run here out of Roswell park and we saw the effect immediately. And tons of calls to the quit line a dramatic spike up. People all over the states. Serbian motivated by those ads maybe as you know emotionally -- that they are just say you know I don't wanna I don't wanna be like that person in the at an -- public service announcement and I'm gonna not take action to quit so. It starts at the you know right from that initial decision that day enough is enough. And I'm gonna do my best to try to break free of that that nicotine poll that has. I'm individual. And done so actions like this -- the advertising. Other sources inside activities all trying to educate people. To reinforce that we're talking about the number one preventable cause of death and disease and our communities and that we need to do something right away.
Doctor thank you for being with us this morning good like -- event later this morning thank you thank you doctor Andrew highland will Roswell Park Cancer Institute again. All of these -- from across New York's they would gather in Niagara square 10:30 this morning to drive home the point of tobacco marketing and -- teens.
