When we began to digest yesterday's sudden retirement of Pope Benedict in Rome Italy. It got us to thinking should people in advanced age snow. The Pope is 86 years old should older people automatically begin thinking about retirement. We're going to talk about it with our next guest on the WB in -- like doctor Kenneth -- you know. He Jerry attrition with -- -- memorial hospital. Doctor Garber in -- thank you for joining us on this. You're welcome sir what is the bottom line question that people. Should be asking themselves. About deciding on whether or not to retire. Am I might get to that there's probably a couple of factors one is whether or not they're enjoying their work. And two are they satisfied with the quality of the work. People are different I mean there must be and that the BO -- a wide range of behaviors and -- -- for her safe for an 85 year old you know some can handle a lot in some dated -- pressures and and others to simply can't is that right. Who put this thing that's very interesting about eating is that the variability. As you get older in those age groups. And increase that significantly. So we all know people who are in their eighties -- quite right now and and clearly couldn't. You know handle the pressure is a good job me specifically. What cognitively because they may have developed dementia. And then you know like some patients who are in their nineties who are still functioning quite well and are you -- working as attorneys I have the judge. And we know that as you age it's. Is cognitive ability. And intelligent or maintain them what to develop -- disease like alzheimer's disease. While the bottom older person -- Associations. With the people they work with you know their ability to get along. You know I again I think it somewhat individual life again within that spectrum of their ability. But I will say that orphaned one individual develops a memory impairment. They don't have the judgment or insight to help. That he did not getting along with their peers what they don't have the insights to help that they are not performing their job at the highest level. So often times. When an individual is brought into my office and an assembly member whether -- children or spouses saying that there are issues that work and that individual is denying it. That's what in the kind of stepped in and do a little bit more formal cognitive assessment. OK with that said. How do you approach. That kind of a person is -- good job of the you know the general manager of the businesses that from someone from human resources. Or do they bring in a specialist. -- you're looking -- it's it a coworker. Could be a partner. They get back music assembly member because the individual who has the deficit cognition. Again may not have the inside that end -- performing at their best level. And I think this issue is what Henry's probably. You know much more common than geriatric practice is when individuals -- driving. He there's someone else who's telling and couldn't come to us and say -- a family member that person's ability. Whether it's physical or cognitive doesn't quite have the skills anymore to maintain -- thing. And usually if you bring that to the primary care doctor he put his responsibility to evaluate the situation. And to make sure that. You know whether an individual is striving whether they're working particularly in -- work. That can impact on an individual's futures. They -- -- I know what they had a position put -- we have the partners had some concerns about the judgment. And it at that point you have to sit down to talk to that person some some accepted and they understand that maybe it's confidence to retire. From others are. They are in denial that because they don't have that that ability. Noted but the judgment whether it be infected there in the short term memory problem whether deficits and that's softened you know very difficult situation. You know doctor covering you often hear you should exercise -- -- don't let your mind go to -- He can you really can you really exercise your mind. Well I you know I think that we -- exercising your mind he's keeping it active. Peninsula and not keeping it active in doing the same thing you you've got a long competitively is taking up a new hobby. Maybe later in life trying to to learn how to play the piano taking an art course. Doing crossword puzzles is so it's a good thing. Taking an instrument learn to play I hit a new instrument or something like that. You know Tony Bennett and Asia 86 continues to have hold concerts. And saying all over the country all over the world for that matter. 86 years old when he got a younger guy who is in so late fifties Glen Campbell. Who is going to call it quits after his current tour because of on -- dimensional there's one extreme. And -- another extreme and I guess we really haven't arrived to the point now where we know what's causing this -- Well I ER yeah again I think successful -- it's a summit like Tony Bennett. Is. Greatly influenced by which means they've inherited from their parent. It's been influenced by the lifestyle that they have led whether those teens have been protected and enable them to go on to be functional into their eighties and nineties and 200. For individuals who unfortunately developed something like alzheimer's -- We do know that it's genetically based in there's several different chromosomes. -- can be activated. War. Whether or predispose -- to the development of dementia you know with all this stuff in the news now that head trauma. With football players we know that there are certain environmental things -- -- and aren't good and who would have been against that that being hit in the head and having multiple concussions. With an predispose you to dimension I think that's sort of somewhat somewhat obvious now in retrospect. So and again you know we we can't say for sure who's gonna have problems when they get older and who's not. But we often like to look at their parents in the genetic make up that they've inherited. Or we learned a lot for me this morning a doctor thank you for joining us. Thank you your welcomes your docs tennis garden arena was Jerry attrition with to -- memorial hospital.
