Parents were here and so if you Europe and traffic Europe and your. Snowy front porch entering into a freezer at 930 starting dirt in your cell phone. I'm just got a text on me that it is almost done snowing -- -- at least for now it was coming down. Listen if you. Follow politics in the buffalo new Yorker and you recount. You were as surprised as I would lose win a guy out of nowhere I was elected. Two the year and legislature in fact the first time ever heard of him beyond his name I went can be said -- this guy -- works at the iris and he's running for office about act and he doesn't have the machine behind him he's going nowhere right. First I heard about him was when he won first I read up on. Was when he won the Democrat primary in September. Because the two factions the Democrat party each have their own candidate there were slugging it out. And pat Burke walked right up the middle of -- surprise them and of course went on to win the general election in the heavily Democrat district. Pat Burke has witnessed in the studio right now pat thanks for common man. -- what's. It yet the they really underestimated you didn't. They did today I -- planned to own but nobody really want to listen to me and I'm happy for them -- very happy for their own. They're plugged -- so so worked out well. Well you know you people say all we know the chief knock on users just the art not personal but let me tell you I don't believe there's such a thing it's just the bartender. Having spent so much time talking to them. Bite here your guy with a college degree you've got aspirations years you've got ideas. Yeah I mean I and I do have a background in this I was a bartender because we we here in a tough economy -- -- have a family and you know three children and a wife that I'm responsible for so I did whatever did you take care of them actually. But I had a lot of experience community work I found enough for profit. So it was easy to dismiss me on the surface. But I think once people actually looked into it and I spent as much times it is. Trying to convince people. Could convince them -- more than just Burton. Well you really -- question I mean not to know not that any just the bartender and a round of arts and not listen -- some of the smartest people -- -- -- bartenders. And down retired they make a lot more than political consultants. And politicians -- -- apps take a pay cut I think yeah Syria are you know what pat. The Republicans don't know what to think you view and I know everybody in the ledge of the air watch and you because they don't know anything about you that they're like looking for -- The three now you explain it's not yeah why don't apply. No I mean I think everything you know one thing and it's time you know I've never experienced any of this. Do you have an agenda. But I do also work with and I think I mean it clears. That I'm gonna take things issue by issue. Within the Democratic Party that that -- same if you push trial my issues that they've been against in the past. I don't really care and don't take anything personally I want to get -- get things done if people get my way. Are people turn. To stop the things I think about it will work counting. I'm an issue that uprising that -- -- -- -- -- but Bana who with with my policy things it's. There's no personally hear anything surprising for me I think people should expect. I'll be pretty straight. Well let me tell -- and you've not been sworn -- no I haven't and you're already shaking things about it. We all mean politics and went on my blog we broke the news that -- -- And moved along from his job as chief of staff of the Democrat majority of the legislature and gone on over to be full time. As county chair by the way not a bad thing is the model worked on it but and and by the we're really tough -- to cancel. But you had a role in that ranked. Well I I felt for the future of the party in and for the minority caucus. That would be best if if he was he folks on the job. As chairman. I thought there might have been some conflicts of Houston -- jobs. And saw I wasn't you know shy about about you know. Voice my opinion about that. Happily he he's decided to -- to focus on being chairman and and we can focus not on our job as legislators. The rumors argument confirmed rumors are that he would always race. You were asked who the heck do you think you are so. I don't know if nobody got so let me ask -- a -- this year I never say -- yeah that's -- you know I I would I would I would stars if you say that -- Gulf -- right not on the radio and yet. No you know us know what some things happen there caucus meetings I think we keep our caucus meetings and I think the Republicans do great job of doing that and I think. Asked Democrats are gonna start to Perugia to. Well you know and and the parties a lot of work in and you know listen I know my Republican friends and so my Democrat friends are not armed journeys on I think he's our guy. I knew we had difficulty in you know it's very difficult job. But a real difficult job be in a county legislator. In a minority caucus. Sometimes think people feel like they're being left -- and it didn't mean if you want shaping the wanna make some things happen. I guess it's not work both sides. I don't know I have never done first so I you know I -- and one of the good things is I'm not thrilled about walking into it as you know in the minority caucus. But I also don't know any better so like him I can you know and do my job and represent my constituents. And try and push good policies good government for -- Tony try and save the taxpayers money. And then hopefully kind of put forward some vision for for -- Tony over the next few years and and hopefully I can keep going with that -- and enjoy the next two years and see what happens. Well at all. You're pushing thirty years. Almost almost thirty obvious point finance recorders -- you know the county -- the legislatures not been. In Republican hands since before you were born. Well I mean certainly it hasn't always been. A full Democrat majority and there's been there's been -- politics has been. He hasn't there's been cast before and you know I've kind of witnesses from the outside. So in that sense I mean we'll we'll see we'll see what the Republicans decide to do. And and I'm anticipating to find out there as well and that your well I mean I tweet when I heard all the stuff that went on here. And here your caucus and we -- going to. Accomplish. It. I tweeted. One thing's for sure -- no slouch. Your notes like I don't think so I think I tried telling people. Now. I'm very proud of being -- kind legislator. It's it's something -- worked really hard for and I and I certainly wouldn't on this job in and claim to be a leader. If I didn't plan leading in -- -- leaders leaders lead. So if I was -- yes it with my hands my pockets in the ground. -- this happen and I'm here for is right right. That's -- -- up there -- you're in the traffic if you're in the snow don't forget to bring an 803 -- to restart I'm thirty gives an update because. Got a lot of people get in the car is wondering which way to drive it very helpful if you hand it with reason to -- starter for now. -- this. It's pretty cranky please the legislature there are -- -- well I I've actually never been in the room that you actually bid in the legislature room yet. -- there has been really nice to have made some new friends it's gotten it's been really. One of ours -- something like watching Pollyanna. About it. You've got. You you've got that now Betty Jean grant is -- agreement or a week ago com bit. On the Republican side we got mr. let's mills is going to be the chairman and joke Rico. Is going to be the majority leader in bomb. What. What you. What's your priority. I mean if you had to do one thing. If you could accomplish one thing for your constituents what that. I would save them money. So there there's a lot of rhetoric that goes on and and and that files the politics of it. But what actually saves -- money where our. Fiduciary responsibilities. -- that doesn't go with the rhetoric solos or when we're looking at the actual -- mind that we. -- have control which is not that much -- most it's mandated. We're looking at where the skyrocketing costs -- highway system where we're spending a lot of money in rooms. We have promises voices main roads isn't as the next counting in years states of I think we have. Actually three tendered him -- roses three states combined now so we're spending -- -- roads and if if we're really serious about being fiscal conservatives. And actually helping our taxpayers. And helping people who need it that we wouldn't line Cohen spent Olbermann roads we knew we wouldn't want subsidized means penalties. I live in the city of buffalo we pay for roads. My district in Cheektowaga they pay from -- most of the roads I think it's Cora erect but services Allen right now with traffic. Point two degrees out there it feels like five and are you -- a tough. Job and he's a -- give us a weather report out there. John are you on the line. I am I -- -- let him move back toward east -- are right now but they just came eastbound on the Yahoo! and ask them well blue water -- -- and everything up the the full speed come down westbound on the mainland should -- and that it's. Up the stage soaked up the wall and have an embargo on the back away. Feast or. Everything's fine here in Cheektowaga by I'm not looking forward to get late Easter are. Well I just heard John that it's got its start to slowdown means stop eastward with the -- John thank you very much for calling yen. Tim in Amherst you have a question for pat Burke. -- I'm sorry I just wanted to clarify the issue -- -- thought that we that we could it would be to not. Keep our roads that -- They're gonna no that's that's arms saying and I'm talking about him on the sheer amount of I'm talking -- within specifically -- county senior recount morning. So we have a significantly. -- disproportionately large amount of county highway roads so. So compared to most of the other counties in New York State who have between. At 30600. We have about we have 11100 I think little bit over 11100 miles. -- highways. And that that's that's. Pretty excessive in my view. So but we got to actually maintain and the fact we have them. I need to back we have more than other counties that are -- that we can't. And on and I'm not saying that not taking care of the roads I'm saying they shouldn't be designated county highways. You're talking about divesting them for the individual communities yes. OK oracle of okay thank you -- -- birdie. And that's that's very interesting well let me ask you this before we go one break. And you're going to be and now in the weather. If you could pick one politician. Got you interest in politics in your lifetime without. Ironically is a Democrat who is John McCain really when he started out his straight talk express. Here's a guy I mean you sound the kind of ethnic and connections available both being Irish as I don't know of relatives attitude you can manage your anger from little bit. He wasn't afraid you know in people's faces. Well and since then I've kind of broken from his political views but that kind of that mentality is something I appreciate -- a politician -- wounded in punts for its. And I area are here that's Jimmy Griffin all right all right pat Burke the new Jimmy Griffin and all the out. And well pat thank you for coming and thanks refused sort of listeners. -- keep an eye on pat Burke the Republicans certainly are. This is Michael -- I'm in for Tom -- here -- newsreader remind the WB Ian will be right back after -- message news. They were back this is Mike doing for Tom Bauerle hearings -- 930 WB yen. Your welcome -- tell us about the selection process. And end and how we came to Pope Francis as a person of the year. Sure it's something we -- -- and look forward to every year action. Bailed out down and are managing editor Nancy get -- -- final election though. Why hoped for and that -- he's been in office or at nine months and already we. We see that he has changed the tone and spoken and and that really the perception of the world's largest church he would. Committed you mercy and not judge and and he's helping people accused the of the church and and -- -- with his. Focus on the poll. You're article is is beautiful and ended it it describes his background. So remarkably well what were you able to take a look at his you know humble roots and get a closer look at yourself. Sure sure are around my co author went down to win a RA and and that and quality time down there getting to know. The community that really shaped ten men and one of the things we see about the holy father is that. He -- really shaped by it the pour in his community and he himself with an immigrant out. And his -- note that experience he. Would walk the -- Regularly he did get it that says. They're the people are and he would act that -- for him those different kind of -- really seen the church. Made up of the port that the poor have something to contribute as opposed -- you know what can the church a -- it around do for the -- Absolutely it at. Your article as it is and and this selection I think release shows us why. Newsmagazines are still important even in this. Crazy technology age. Your behavior of what kind of reaction are you getting to this this is I think it's remarkable. They hear it exploded on social media day care in the C everyone's getting around our hash tag -- -- -- and talking about it on eight but again. We know that perseverance and being. That every -- really want to take apart and then debate we don't expect that every level like actually. And we do expect that it will really generate conversation and and get people talking with one another out. Allen who's keeping our our world and why and what we think about fat cell. It's it's been fun today you know who worked on the project for quite some time and and -- -- come to her action as a writer is actually -- That when you were doing your research and and talking to people. I'm appears to meet but did you know that anyone tell you that they didn't like the guy your that in think he was writer you think he's on the wrong path it was it was going to be critical of his work. It's her and we talk about that a historian of the -- And reaction in I mean so many people have -- -- and that's just the media darling. Because you know he says things that get kicked out. In more liberal environment as being. Earth shattering and changing dogma but that's not what he's doing so he -- push back. And establish himself instead now I stand for that Catholic packet that. Is that you I am this is who have our church it is and what's different it's just that Colin. Now he's chosen to empathize. Different things that he's elevating people as opposed -- issues and I think even internally. We've noticed that. -- you know he's he's ruffling up empowered battered in the area and you know -- he -- it's not as -- -- -- rising to the top you really want to church made up of pastor to care about the people of the. Well I get asked this that was with them and I'm I'm I'm respect I'm not supposed to ask this but are are you Catholic are you Catholic -- so. I'm I'm actually not Catholic and I -- I. Well I'm I'm just curious because as someone who's not Catholic. Stuck taking a look at this from an outside perspective must be even more valuable. Well I and I actually have that matches the dignity so I needed to happen after -- and now I have come out that. Really. Well that comes through in the story apps. It really comes in our your your appreciation the spirituality of. Yeah yeah I think at a party candidate with spiritual story and I think. -- from being that the world today. Arab you know and put it that they would just that after a week Brett Nelson Mandela just diet and we've been able to feed back. The power of them -- really strong moral influence in society. And -- France and is. Preventing another such opportunity right I mean he is immoral place status. One point two billion people panicked and though. And it it it's quite something to be a productive.
